Big Blue is a bi-annual publication that explores the relationship between ocean life and mankind through all facets of its existence and impact. This understanding is crucial to the future of our ocean and by extension, our future as well.

The first issue from the journal, The Family Cousteau, focuses on the Cousteau legacy. Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French naval officer, explorer, filmmaker, innovator, and researcher who studied all forms of life within the sea. His discoveries immensely progressed our understanding of the ocean to what it is today. Spanning from interviews with the Cousteau grandchildren to accounts of Jacques-Yves and Emile's creation of the Aqua-Lung, this issue goes deep into ocean history.

Utilizing cool backgrounds with pops of saturated colors reflect both the scientific and humanistic tones that Cousteau embraced in his life. The combination of a soft, friendly serif and an angular sans-serif brings these two worlds of research and family together.

A diverse system of hand-drawn iconography divides the contents of the publication. These icons are inspired by nautical charting symbols, which play off their original usage by guiding the viewer through uncharted territory, in this case the publication.

The book is 14 x 9” folded to 7 x 9”. The spine is sewn-bound; the cover is printed on 100lb Antique Grey Paper, and the interior is printed on 60lb Smooth Grey Paper.

Typefaces are Telegraf (by Nick Losacco) and PP Woodland (on Pangram Pangram Foundry).
